Tonight we are parking our motor home at the local KOA campground just to make sure everything is working and we had not forgotten anything- which we had. After dinner with our neighbors we headed over for a night in the campground. Of course being July 4th the fireworks went on till the early morning light, needless to say we were both sleep deprived,
Went back to the house to pick up items we forgot and then headed out for the first leg of our trip, 370 miles to an overnight campground in northern Virginia. Traffic was very heavy on US route 81, fortunately for us the construction was on the southbound lanes, traffic was backed up for miles.
During one of our stops was for fuel we waited behind two tractor trailers when a young man knocked on our window. In a very thick accent he asked how it is we found a motor home from his homeland. Turns out he is from Tanzania, Africa, Zanzibar is a primary city in that country. He was really impressed with our "white tiger" painting, said it was "perfect" Small world, here we are in Virginia, driving a motor home made in Oregon, talking to a fellow who grew up in Tanzania and has been to Zanzibar.
We continued onto our overnight campground, Cedar Creek. "Rugged" is a good description, however it does have running water and electric. With the temperature here in the 90's and the humidity the same we are thankful for our A/C.
Wednesday we drive another 300 miles thorough Pennsylvania, and will arrive in Williamstown Ma. on Thursday.
At dawn, October 19, 1864, the Confederate Army of the Valley under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early surprised the Federal army at Cedar Creek and routed the VIII and XIX Army Corps. Commander Major Gen. Philip Sheridan arrived from Winchester to rally his troops and, in the afternoon, launched a crushing counterattack. That attack recovered the battlefield. Sheridan’s victory at Cedar Creek broke the back of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. Lincoln rode the momentum of Sheridan’s victories in the Valley and Sherman’s successes in Georgia to re-election.
